What is Classical Christian Education?

Classical Christian Education is an ancient system of learning infused with a Christocentric ethos and biblical worldview using methods based on natural phases of student development in Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric known in Latin as the Trivium. Through this Paideia we cultivate the Seven Christian Virtues and train students to interact with the classic books of Western Civilization. We return students to the classic liberal arts where they can become free-thinking students who love to learn and are unafraid to think critically, logically, and reclaim the sense of wonder in the world around them. The aim is not to only educate the mind, but to also develop the heart to recognize and exemplify virtue, beauty, and truth as a reflection of God’s grace in the Imago Dei.

Classical education can best be understood as three fundamental things:

Method

First, it is a method, which uses the trivium, the pattern of teaching students in three stages, grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric, which correspond to their developmental abilities.

Curriculum

Second, it refers to the content of the curriculum, which is distinguished by the presence of subjects like Latin, logic, theology, and rhetoric, plus common subjects such as history, science, math, etc.

Responsibility

Finally, it is responsible to the Western tradition, which is unique in its view of man as image bearer and in the knowability of truth.

THE PROBLEM

There is a crisis of honor and responsibility in our culture, which has rejected the doctrine of creation and blinded us to see one another as divine image bearers, whose worth and dignity come from our Creator who endows us with both rights and duties to one another. This has resulted in vulgarity, a cheapening of human life, an elevation of feelings over truth, an ignorance of Western Civilization, a decline in family formation, and increasing narcissism.

  • 70% of young adults leave the church once they attend college.
  • 83% of teens say moral truth depends on the circumstances
  • Only 7% of teens said their moral choices were based on Biblical principles

“The goal of education is not just to train the mind but to train the heart to love what is beautiful.”

Plato

THE NEED

There is a need in Elizabeth City for rigorous, Christ-centered education that establishes a

comprehensive Biblical worldview. An education that places the child’s developmental needs

over any ideology or political interest. An education that restores human dignity as image-bearers and cultivates wise, virtuous citizens who become lifelong scholars.

Modern confusion...

ancient clarity

The decline in Western Civilization is due to the loss of confidence in the true, good, and beautiful, and CCE offers a cure in its renewed quest for that truth, goodness, and beauty.

  • Is CCA a non-profit?

    Yes, we are a 501(c)(3).

  • How is CCA differ from the other local private Christian schools?

CCA is not a reaction against the world, but a return to a positive Biblical vision for education. It is not a secular curriculum that adds prayer, chapel, and a Bible class, but is instead a Copernican revolution which comes to see Scripture as the sun at the center that provides the light by which we see everything else. Without that light we do not have objectivity, only subjective darkness.

  • Are there other Classical Christian Schools? If so, are they successful? Are they growing in number?

There are over 300 Classical Christian Schools which have educated over 50,000 students. Classical education is the fastest growing movement in Christian schooling. See ClassicalDifference.com/good-soil for research on academic, cultural, and spiritual outcomes of Classical Christian Schools.
